Villa San Carlo is a historic residential complex in Costabissara, Vicenza, now serving as a spiritual retreat centre under the Diocese of Vicenza. Originally owned by the Bissari Counts from the 13th century, the main villa sits within a 58,000 m² park that includes a monumental Lebanon cedar. Following its acquisition by the Diocese in December 1960, the villa underwent extensive restorations through the 1960s and 70s, including the construction of a chapel, the addition of a reception hall, and various other architectural enhancements. The retreat was officially inaugurated on May 10, 1964.

Today, the complex includes the original north wing, expanded south wings, a church, a restored Doric colonnade, and several outbuildings, all surrounded by a historically significant park. As the site has grown in use and significance, the need for a modern, effective fire detection system became paramount, particularly one that could protect the site without compromising its heritage architecture.

The installer Ciemme Electronic srl, was selected to deliver a bespoke fire detection solution. The system had to overcome several key challenges: maintaining the integrity of the original interiors, avoiding any visible cabling in protected areas, and delivering high reliability with minimal risk of false alarms. Most importantly, the system had to be intuitive for the retreat staff to manage.

To meet these requirements, the team installed Hochiki’s advanced Latitude control panel at the heart of the system. A hybrid solution was deployed, combining hardwired ESP devices, such as smoke sensors, call points, visual alarm devices, sounders, and modules, in areas where cabling was feasible. In the more sensitive historic zones, where intrusive wiring was not an option, the full Ekho wireless range was used. This allowed for discreet, comprehensive fire detection throughout the villa, all without altering its protected features.

Matteo Cecchin, at Ciemme Electronic srl, commented:

“We were asked to respect every architectural detail while ensuring complete fire protection. After a careful study of the various environments and the challenges related to system design and installation, we chose the flexibility and performance of Hochiki systems; the wireless devices were particularly important for preserving the interiors: this system represents a perfect balance between safety and heritage preservation.”

Cecchin continues:

“Hochiki’s Latitude system, combined with ESP devices and the Ekho wireless range, gave us exactly what we needed: smooth installation, reliable performance, and the ability to maintain the character of the Villa.”
