Retail Fire Alarm Systems

From bustling malls to individual stores, retail spaces face risks including high customer volumes, diverse merchandise and complex layouts. With public safety and business continuity at stake, retail operators need reliable photoelectric smoke sensors for retail, emergency lighting for retail stores, and false alarm reduction in malls to protect customers and staff without disrupting operations.

Entertainment establishments, such as shopping malls and multiplexes, are popular attractions due to their ability to provide a full range of facilities all in one space. However, these multipurpose destinations do require more complex life safety systems, meaning additional considerations for specifiers, installers and end users. Hochiki recently provided a solution to these challenges when called upon to provide high-end life safety protection at the Firestone Entertainment Hub in Jamnagar.

Problems & Solutions

Risky Environment

Retail sites present an environment with many risks and an increased potential for many types of fire.

Multi-level Risk

Retail sites present various levels of risk and as such sometimes pose specific response procedures.

False Alarm Disturbance

False alarms cause undue panic but more importantly, whilst being investigated, shoppers are evacuated unnecessarily leading to loss of turnover at tills, increased risk of theft during the confusion and a damaged reputation.

Chief Fire Officers Association

The most common causes of unwanted alarms are down to problems with product selection, misguided installation, or little or no system maintenance. The Chief Fire Officers' Association is pressing for measures that are likely to mean a reduced level of response for premises that have a poor unwanted alarm history.

Complex Environment

The retail environment is complex, with a multitude of risk types coupled with many shoppers, most unfamiliar with their surrounding which need to be evacuated efficiently.

Fire Alarm

Retail Fire Alarm System Requirements

On 1 October 2006, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 became law and represented a major step in protecting building occupants. The RRFSO is risk assessment based and states that responsibility for fire safety should rest with a defined ‘responsible person'. It is their responsibility to ensure appropriate fire systems are designed, installed and maintained; failure to comply with the RRFSO will leave the responsible person and/ or building owners vulnerable to prosecution.

In the most extreme cases inadequate fire safety systems could lead to loss of life, and even small-scale fires can lead to tragedies. It is in the shopping centres and malls greatest interest to keep people safe. By using Hochiki fire safety equipment, fires can be detected at an early stage in their development, minimising these impacts.
