Mechanical - Product Design Engineer

Department: Research and Development (R&D) Location: Rochester (maybe some travel to other locations) Role Purpose A great opportunity for an engineer looking to forward their career as a mechanical design / product design engineer. The position will include a wide variety of tasks from initial concept design through to manufacture and implementation. Our R&D department consists of 4 sections: mechanical, electronics, software, and test. All our engineers work side by side to create the latest generation of life safety equipment that includes Fire panels, devices, and detectors for use all over the world. You will be able to create great products that you can take pride in knowing has a positive impact in the real world. The successful candidate will be working alongside the existing multidiscipline R&D team but should also be comfortable working on their own.

What you’ll be doing

  • Producing product design visuals for comment and approval
  • Producing engineering drawings for production
  • Producing manufacturing instructions
  • Producing Marketing visuals
  • Artwork generation for inhouse graphics manufacturing
  • Maintain and update existing product designs and design documentation as required
  • Bill of materials generation
  • Working closely with the other engineers, production, and production engineering where necessary
  • Produce prototypes of designs where appropriate
  • Assist with Environmental testing of products

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) of grades A-C (including Math’s and English)
  • Degree in related discipline

Experience

  • Graduate to 3 years with relevant product design degree or equivalent experience

Knowledge/Skills

  • A mix of the following skills and a keen willingness to learn:
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design & fabrication
  • Knowledge of plastic injection part design
  • Excellent Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop design skills
  • Experience in Autodesk AutoCAD 2D CAD
  • Experience in either Autodesk Inventor and/or Solidworks CAD
  • Experience in Keyshot or other 3D rendering package
  • Ability to work well in a team but also independently as required
  • Well organised and able to work on multiple tasks
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning
