The Savoy Theatre is an iconic London venue that has played host
to a wide variety of performances from operas to pop concerts.
Architecturally stunning, it is one of the city's leading theatres
and people from all over the world pass through its doors to watch
the performances that take place there.
The Savoy Theatre was built by Richard D'Oyly Carte on the site
of the old Savoy Palace as a showcase for the works of Gilbert and
Sullivan. Having purchased the freehold of the site for the grand
sum of £11,000, the theatre opened its doors on 10th October
1881.
Since then it has undergone a number of modifications and
refurbishments, most notably in 1929 when, under the auspices of
Richard D'Oyly Carte's son Rupert, the Victorian auditorium was
demolished. 135 days later the new building was opened and was
described as a miracle of modernism.
